We’ve always been in to gardening but this year we have become urban farmers.

This winter and spring we’ve been busy working in the yard pretty much every weekend / any chance we get when it’s not raining. Carrie got our existing garden bed prepped and planted a few months ago and we’re about to pick our first fruits… swiss chard, lettuce and broccoli.

We reclaimed a large space in the back corner of the yard and converted it to more garden space. The area was laiden with black berries… what a chore cutting those back and digging out all the roots.

Carrie has planted raspberries and blue berries, a fruit tree and most of our summer vetetables are in the ground already… cucumbers, tomatoes, water melons, snap peas. This weekend we are going to finish up by planting the squash, zucchinis and some more peppers.

Now I said adventures in urban farming because we’re not just gardening anymore… now we’re raising backyard chickens also.

It took me several weekends but it turned out way better than I had ever expected… our chicken coop. We managed to build a chicken coop for under $30.00 using or should I say reusing old lumber that I’ve found along the way. And now we are raising 5 chickens and will have our own fresh eggs sometime in August or September.

If you are really interested in learning more or keeping up with our urban farming adventures you should check out enviro, green living, sustainable living blog – http://www.litegreenliving.com

Well January is half over so you can only imagine that I’ve been completely swamped since I’m just getting out the my happy new post.

If you didn’t already know.. we moved to Eugene, OR. Had to leave Tehachapi.. that place was killing us, monetarily(? is this a word), mentally and physically. We’ve been here almost 2 months and moved to a place knowing not a single soul.. we love Eugene! Carrie has started up with a workout group called Eugene CrossFit. I myself have been getting out and running 3 days a week.. plus I ride my bike most places I need to go not mention finally being able to hit some single track. It feels great to be getting back into shape.

The Mountain Biking Scene Here Rocks

This has really made my year.. finally being able to get out in the woods again on my bike. Above all other things… rafting, hiking, rock climbing & snowboarding…. I missed mountain biking the most. As it turns out we moved to the right place. Eugene has some awesome mountain biking all around… theres some single track less than 3 miles from our house.

I hooked up with a mtn bike group called DOD (Disciples of Dirt – and no its not a religious group). These guys have been building their own secret trail network for some 15 years or something like that… its called WhyPass. It definitely is a secret little stash off on BLM land south of Eugene… these trails are not on any map or guidebook. Google directions to whypass.. you won’t find them… you have to obtain them through one of the disciples.

Business & Networking

Being that I do freelance web design and search engine marketing… and all my clients are virtual… business just kept on going through the move to Eugene. I just took a few days off of work and then right back at it. Even better than that is I’m already plugging in to the business community here by joining a Meet Up Group as well as trying to make some connections via Linked In.

About a month ago or so I said to Carrie, part jokingly.. “Let’s buy a camper and just travel and live out of it for a while.” She wasn’t too fond of the idea.

Funny, the other night Carrie was surfing around the internet, on the Mothering.com Forum or MDC and came across a Christian family who decided to buy a diesel motor home, converted it to run on vegetable oil and they became ECO travelers and live where ever they want.

Carrie started getting excited about this.. after all I started it. So I said to her.. how is that gonna work with 3 kids and my business. She went out and found families with four kids doing just this. Turns out there are lots of families who lead a nomadic life with kids.

We might be a little crazy but, we are actually considering a simpler life of ECO RV Living & Traveling. I can honestly say we are dying here in Tehachapi and now with gas prices at nearly $5.00 a gal we are almost trapped. We believe the Lord put us here for a reason.. to find him and that we did.. now it’s time to move on.

We won’t be taking any drastic measures to rush out of here.. we’re probably looking at it as a 1yr goal. We at least have to stay her in Tehachapi until the baby is born in October.
